Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the interpretation of QS. An-Nisa’ verse 34 in Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab and Fi Zhilalil Qur’an by Sayyid Qutb, particularly concerning the concept of qawwamah, the obligation of financial maintenance, and the mechanism for resolving nusyuz. The research questions are: (1) how do both exegetes interpret the concept of male leadership within the family; (2) how do they understand the stages of resolving marital conflict; and (3) what are the methodological and hermeneutical differences between them. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. The analysis is conducted descriptively and comparatively by examining the primary exegetical texts and comparing the interpretative orientation, method, and socio-historical background of each scholar. The findings indicate that both exegetes agree on the fundamental principles of the husband’s leadership, the obligation of financial support, and the gradual resolution of nusyuz. However, Quraish Shihab emphasizes ethical, psychological, and contextual dimensions, interpreting leadership as a trust bounded by justice and compassion. In contrast, Sayyid Qutb situates the verse within the comprehensive framework of the Islamic social system, emphasizing structural stability and ideological values. These differences enrich the discourse of Qur’anic exegesis and demonstrate that QS. An-Nisa’ verse 34 can be understood through both ethical-contextual and systemic-ideological perspectives.
