Abstract

This study aims to examine the concept of nusyuz as mentioned in the Qur’an, Surah An-Nisa (4):34, and to analyze how Syeikh Nawawi Al-Bantani interprets this verse in his classical exegesis, Tafsir Al-Munir. The issue of nusyuz, often associated with marital disharmony and disobedience within the family structure, holds complex implications that require contextual and linguistic analysis. Using a qualitative method through a literature-based approach, this research explores the semantic, socio-cultural, and ethical dimensions of the verse and compares contemporary understandings with traditional interpretations from classical Indonesian Islamic scholarship. Syeikh Nawawi’s interpretation provides a unique perspective that is not only rooted in traditional Islamic teachings but also closely tied to the local cultural values of Indonesian Muslim communities. The findings indicate that interpretations of nusyuz reflect broader ethical considerations and underline the importance of balance in gender roles and family responsibilities in Islamic family law.
